1972 Volvo 1800Esc VIN 1826364-038317

This is a superb, complete “frame off “ restoration with significant modifications to the engine and drivetrain making it perform at a much higher level than the stock 1800E. These modifications were developed by Vintage Performance Developments (VPD) in Syracuse, NY. Some additional areas were also upgraded though the car looks stock, making this really a “resto-mod”. For example as many of the original decals as possible were used to have someone who doesn't know these cars very well to look at it and think that it came that way from the factory. The only outward difference from stock is the hood bump, needed to clear the supercharger. Work was completed in 2005. Approximately 550 miles has been put on the car since.

Body: The body was stripped of everything except the suspension, then it was media blasted and primed with a self etching primer. Any rust was cut out and new panels were welded in were needed. Some of the bodywork was then done in metal. The final detail body work was cleaned up with body filler. About three hundred hours were required to complete the body to this point. The car was then moved to the painters. The suspension was removed to undercoat and then paint the entire car. This took about 130 more hours. It is painted in the original 111 blue. The body is laser straight and the paint is really beautiful.

External trim: All chrome was redone in triple plate and all stainless was either replaced with new or polished to look new. Bright H4 headlights replace the stock sealed beams. The taillight lenses are the correct thick new old stock ones for the year of the car. Glass is excellent.

Suspension and drive train: The suspension was given the VPD treatment also. It was disassembled, the cross member reinforced and then all of the components were powder coated. A limited slip unit was put into the rear end along with new bearings and seals. It was from an automatic so the gearing is 3.91 to 1. The suspension was re-assembled with polyurethane bushings, progressive rate springs and Bilstein shocks. All of the suspension bumpers and cushions were replaced with new ones. The steering box and the idler arm bracket are polished, along with the brass brake line junction pieces. Rebuilt calipers, new discs and new brake pads and hand cable were installed. All of the tiny hardware pieces were replaced or refinished. New stainless hard lines and IPD stainless flex lines for the brakes were also installed. The portioning valves were taken apart, cleaned and new seals added. Also the disc backing plates were re-zinc plated. The master cylinder is new and the booster was rebuilt. A Borg Warner T5 transmission with an aluminum flywheel, heavy duty pressure plate, and heavy duty clutch disc were installed with custom adapter plate and mount. The aluminum bell housing is polished. 15 x 6” “Virgo” wheels are installed with Goodyear Eagle 205/60-15 tires.

Engine: B20 bored .030”over, everything rebuilt and balanced with forged pistons, heavy duty oil pump, ARP rod bolts, VPD Super Charger and cam, performance lifters and rods, steel and aluminum timing gears. Fuel delivery is through a dual throat side draft Weber carburetor. Mallory Unilite billet aluminum distributor, J&S anti-knock ignition, ported head, ceramic coated header and 2.5 inch stainless steel exhaust with two Magnaflow polished stainless steel mufflers. The starter, alternator etc. were replaced with new units.

Interior: The seats, front and back were recovered in all leather. The carpet is Wilton wool from England. The entire inside of the car is lined with DynaMat Xtreme. All the interior panels are new. The head liner is new. The dash pads are new. A beautiful Nardi wood steering wheel replaced the original. The dash was completely redone. The gauges are new Smiths black faced gauges. They are the ones used on the original Cobras, complete with counterclockwise speedometer. A volt gauge, a boost gauge and an Air/Fuel ration gauge were added. The boost and Air/Fuel are offset a bit to give the passenger a good view of them. The wood is real birch, stained and covered with a urethane finish. The wood is trimmed with the same black rubber trim used around the chrome grill housing. Also matching wood is in the console. I t has a unique key and a starter button. Also installed were special indicator lights for the blinkers, high beams, amps, and oil pressure.

Miscellaneous: The trunk contains an original tool kit and jack, as well as spare tire/wheel to match the ones mounted. A binder containing detailed pictures of the restoration process is also included.

This is truly an outstanding 1800, with upgrades that make it perform as good as it looks. It is being offered at US$35,000, much less than it would take to duplicate.
